Oxford Dictionary of English App Reviews
This app is not bad, but if you own a Mac computer there is no reason to purchase it (in fact the absence of a thesaurus makes it less functional than Dictionary). Cant believe I just wasted $10!
Very good dictionary. The interface looks slightly outdated and oversimplified (in other words, drab). It would require a bit of a facelift, but it does the job right nonetheless.
I would usually prefer (many) other dictionaries to an Oxford dictionary... But I must say that I was frustrated a little bit (especially when I compare it to Cambridge Advanced Dictionary). The biggest flaw is the sound... except for some entires, the sounds (pronunciation) are all badly recorded (they sound like they were recorded in the 80s). I dont know - maybe they were aiming to keep the size of the app small... if so, it is clear that this was a mistake... Other than that, the entries and explanations are OK. The interface should be developed as well. Although this is a much smaller dictionary, using OED (full edition) was way easier for me... The entries, exmaples are not easy to follow at first glance... Regarding Oxfords success in dictionary industry, this version obviously falls short in satisfying its audience... Thank you anyway...
Just what Ive been waiting for on the Mac! Much more in depth than OS Oxford American Dictionary. Includes audio pronunciations. Also gives alphabetical list of words surrounding searched word as suggestions for misspelled word. But please sell Oxford Thesaurus of English as well! Without the thesaurs, the glass is half empty.
Just loaded OS X Lion and discovered that my Merriam Webster dictionary was not compatible with this software, so I purchased the OED. Its a fine dictionary based on outstanding lexicography. But the app description should explicitly note that the audio pronunciations are those of British speakers, not American. Thus, schedule is pronounced "shedule" and lieutenant, "leftenant." Not a deal breaker, but something buyers should know up front.
Great app, don’t get me wrong, it does its job. However, for $10 I wanted more than I got. For example, I think this app could be a lot better if it had synonyms and antonyms. So if the people at Oxford Dictionary read this: Please add a thesaurus!
Oxford English Dictionary
I own the Compact Edition of the OED, but thought that for $9.99 I could have a reasonably complete source for definitions, without necessitating pulling down the two volumnes and magnifying glass. To my surprise, the second word I searched, APHYLLOUS, was not in the dictionary. "Surprise" is the wrong word; I feel cheated.
Good dictionary
I like the wildcard search feature
meh
This is a fine dictionary for a high schooo student, but anyone who works with words or has a real enthusiasm for words and language will have to look elsewhere — this is a far cry from any solid unabridged dictioanry.
Oxford Dictionary of English, ver 3.5
Oxford’s a great dictionary—i have COED (Concise Oxford’s English Dictionary) on my MACmini and it works well. The newer version, 3.5 I loaded on my new MacAir, but i can’t get the audio (word pronunciation) to work. That’s the reason I rated the dictionary a 3 instead of a 5.
Great App + Great Content ESPECIALLY WHEN COMBINED WITH OTHER DICTIONARY APPS BY SAME APP MAKER
First of all, the interface is great. And I chose to buy the full set of Oxford dictionaries from this app maker because they all interface very well together. These WordWeb dictionaries (Oxford Dictionary of English in this case) are basically an exceptional replacement for the built-indictionaries in MacOS. The content is very well organanized, and the interface is up-to-date with the latest improvements in MacOS. As far as content, it does not get any better than Oxford and Chambers. Of course it would be amaziang to have the entire Oxford English Dictionary, but that license is impossible to obtain and would cost $1,000. But for everyday use this is a fantastic set of products. If you have not looked, check out the other offerings by this developer. I have used these WordWeb softwares for 9 years (since 2009) before they were on the App Store. They are truly excellent for writers, academics, and other researchers. Fast, efficient with good content. (I am also putting this review on the other WordWeb App Store products I own, because they really are part of an integrated product.)
Caveat Emptor
I have used this dictionary for years and loved it on my iPhone. I bought a new iPhone a few months ago and discovered that I could not open my OED app. So I bought this new version of the Oxford Dictionary of English. At $9.99 it should be worth it, and on my Mac it is a worthwhile purchase. The problem is that I wanted this OED for my iPhone so that I could continue to have constant access to a quality dictionary. Unfortunately, it only works on the Mac at home. Apparently the company has never gone to the trouble of developing their product for the new iPhones.
Pronunciation Problem
Hi. Team, This app is kind of expensive but i liked it so much whichh lead me to buy it. But when I use it, the pronunciation only provides one option. I don’t even know wheter the pronunciation provided is British or North American. I strongly advise that the dictionary team add such feature of 2 pronunciations as other dictionaries do. So that English learners or those who want to know their pronunciation differences can make a clearer and better progress. Regards.
Nice but ...
I like this dictionary app but it is quite expensive, especially in light of the fact that the audio pronuciation feature does not work at all.
For $10 I expected more.

Nearly perfect!
